A camera that would last eight years a few suburbs inland can be failing within two near the water. Nothing was faulty. It was simply never built for these conditions.
If you are anywhere near the coast, this is worth understanding before you buy anything, because the difference in cost between suitable and unsuitable equipment is small compared to replacing it twice.
What salt air actually does
Salt is carried inland on the wind as a fine airborne mist, well beyond the beach itself. It settles on everything, absorbs moisture from the air, and stays damp far longer than rain would.
That permanent damp salt layer corrodes metal. It attacks fixings, brackets, screw threads and any exposed connection. It works its way into seams and around seals, and once corrosion starts around a seal the housing is no longer weatherproof, which lets moisture in, which accelerates everything.
The failure is usually gradual. Fogging inside the lens dome, then intermittent dropouts, then nothing.
Sun is the second problem
Australian UV is punishing, and cameras generally sit in the most exposed positions on the building because that is where the view is.
Sustained UV makes cheap plastic housings brittle and chalky. Once brittle, they crack. Once cracked, water gets in. Rubber seals and cable glands harden and lose their ability to seal, which does the same thing more slowly.
Heat matters too. A dark camera housing in full afternoon sun on a western wall runs hot, and sustained heat shortens the life of the electronics inside.
IP ratings are necessary but not sufficient
An IP rating tells you how well a housing resists dust and water. IP66 or IP67 is a reasonable baseline for an outdoor camera.
What an IP rating does not tell you is how the housing handles salt corrosion or prolonged UV. A camera can be genuinely IP67 rated and still have a bracket that rusts through, or a plastic housing that goes brittle in three summers.
So the IP rating is a starting point, not the whole answer. Ask about the housing material and the fixings as well. A properly specified CCTV system installation should take the environmental conditions into account rather than choosing equipment from the IP rating alone.
The parts that fail first
- Mounting brackets and screws. Often the cheapest part of the whole installation and usually the first thing to go. Stainless steel fixings are not expensive and make a real difference.
- Cable glands and entry points. Where the cable enters the camera is the most vulnerable spot on the whole unit.
- The dome or lens cover. Salt residue etches and hazes it, which degrades the image long before the camera itself fails.
- Exposed connectors. Any junction not properly sealed will corrode.
Notice that most of these are installation details rather than camera specification. A well specified camera badly mounted will still fail early.
What to specify near the water
- A housing rated for the conditions, with material suited to marine environments
- Stainless steel brackets and fixings, not painted mild steel
- Properly sealed cable entries and connections, not tape
- Mounting positions with some shelter where possible, under an eave rather than fully exposed
- Consideration of which wall gets full afternoon sun
Where a camera has to sit fully exposed, that is fine, it just needs to be the right camera in the right housing.
