Why is my WiFi weak in the back of the house?

Accepted Answer

Distance and building materials. WiFi is a radio signal that loses strength every time it passes through a wall, and solid brick, concrete and tiled areas absorb far more of it than plasterboard. By the time the signal reaches the far end of the house it may be too weak to be useful. Devices at the edge of range also drop to slower connection speeds to stay connected, so the room feels doubly slow.

Will a WiFi extender fix my dead zone?

Accepted Answer

Sometimes, but they often disappoint. An extender can only rebroadcast the signal it receives, so placing it in the weak area simply rebroadcasts a weak signal. Most extenders also reduce throughput because the same radio handles both directions of traffic. They can help in smaller homes with a single mild dead spot. For larger or solidly built homes, a wired access point delivers a much better result.

Is it better to move my router or add another access point?

Accepted Answer

Moving the router helps if it is currently in a corner or inside a cupboard, but the router usually has to stay near where the connection enters the building. In larger homes, centring it just spreads the weakness around rather than solving it. Adding a second access point connected by cable gives you a full strength signal starting close to the problem area, which is far more effective.

How many access points does a house need?

Most homes need one or two in addition to the main router. It depends on floor area, the number of levels, and what the walls are made of. A single storey home with lightweight internal walls may need nothing extra. A two storey brick home with a studio out the back may need two. We assess the layout and construction rather than working from floor area alone.

Can you run network cabling without damaging walls?

Accepted Answer

In most homes, yes. Cabling can usually be run through roof spaces, under floors, or along existing service paths, with only small access points needed at each end. Older homes and slab-on-ground builds can be more restrictive, which is why we look at the property first and explain what is realistic before any work starts. Cabling connected to the telecommunications network is carried out under our ACRS Master Cabler registration.

Why does my phone stay on weak WiFi even when I walk closer to the router?

Accepted Answer

Devices tend to hold onto a connection until it becomes unusable rather than switching to a stronger one nearby. This is normal behaviour and it is why people often experience poor performance even in reasonable coverage. A properly configured multi-point network handles this far better, because the network guides devices onto the best available connection instead of leaving them stuck.
